Dental veneers have sometimes been referred to as \u2018false fingernails for the teeth\u2019. This is a simple and somewhat incorrect definition, though there are similarities as well. In addition to providing a cosmetic solution for certain dental problems, they also offer a corrective treatment for some conditions.<\/p>\n
In today\u2019s blog, our Epsom cosmetic dentists<\/a> take a look at some of the more common uses of dental veneers.<\/p>\n Severely stained teeth<\/strong><\/p>\n One of the most obvious uses for dental veneers is when patients have teeth that are very heavily stained. Whilst a teeth whitening procedure may improve them a little, the results would be likely to disappoint in more advanced cases. Instead of restoring the whiteness of the tooth enamel, porcelain veneers are, instead, used to replace it.<\/p>\n Chipped or cracked teeth<\/strong><\/p>\n If a tooth is chipped, cracked or has what are known as \u2018craze lines\u2019, there is little that a teeth whitening procedure can do to restore them. Indeed, simply whitening your teeth is likely to only draw more attention to these other flaws in your teeth. Dental veneers are an excellent way of restoring the appearance of teeth that have been damaged in this way.<\/p>\n Eroded enamel<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Enamel erosion is becoming an increasing problem; one sometimes put down to the large market for fizzy and sugary drinks. This can cause the tooth enamel to gradually erode, making them susceptible to both staining and tooth decay. It is worth noting here that even some healthy foods, especially those with high acid content such as citric fruits, can equally cause the enamel of the teeth to become eroded. More severe cases of enamel erosion can be treated with veneers.<\/p>\n Diastema<\/strong><\/p>\n Although not an orthodontic appliance (brace), dental veneers can be used to mask certain minor issues with teeth alignment. They are most commonly used in the case of a diastema, where there is a noticeable gap between the top two front teeth. Whilst some people consider this to be an attractive look, it can gradually cause other teeth to move as well and is usually best corrected. Veneers may not always be the most appropriate treatment for this issue though, and a thorough diagnosis would need to be made by our Epsom dental team.<\/p>\n
