Teeth straightening or orthodontics has been available for many years using traditional wired braces. Whilst this method is very effective, the old fashioned type of brace may be uncomfortable for some and not very pleasing to the eye. Many of us will be able to recall the unpleasant experience of having to wear unsightly metal braces during our childhood and shudder at the thought.
However, as with many dental techniques, there is now a modern and more user friendly alternative, certainly in terms of aesthetics. This modern new method is known as the invisible or clear brace with popular brands like Invisalign, Six Month Smiles and Inman Aligner all readily available.
There are a number of clear advantages when comparing clear braces and aligners to the traditional wired version:
- they are far less visible to the eye and hence much less intrusive - indeed, unless viewed very close up it is difficult to see that they are there at all. This is also one of the main reasons why adults are also turning to invisible braces where previously they shunned the old-fashioned alternative.
- comfort - there is no harsh wiring
- the new clear braces are very easy to remove for cleaning
How our Orthodontist fits invisible braces
The treatment process is painless and will start with our dentist taking an impression of your teeth so that the new position can be carefully calculated. Once this has been done, we manufacture a set of new aligners, which are typically made from clear plastic and designed to progressively push the tooth or several teeth to the desired position.
Every couple of weeks we will invite you back to check progress and at the right time, fit the next aligner in the range to continue moving your teeth. The process can take several months in children where it is still relatively easy to guide new teeth. In adults, the process can take a little longer as the teeth are already set in place.
