Compudent
and The Wand®
|
It doesn't look like a syringe. It doesn't feel like a syringe.
And it works better than a syringe, resulting in a more pleasant
experience. Milestone Scientifics' computer controlled local anaesthetic
delivery systems, which feature the Wand, a lightweight handpiece
that looks like a pen, eliminates the pain you can feel from an
injection.
The CompuDent system features state-of-the-art technology
that makes painful injections a thing of the past. This revolutionary
system, consisting of two main elements, the CompuDent computer
and the Wand handpiece, features a pain-free approach to delivering
local anaesthetic.
The traditional dental syringe has changed very little since its
introduction in 1853. It is a difficult-to-handle item and its use
frequently causes unnecessary pain due to the amount of pressure
needed to inject anaesthetic. In the era of modern dentistry it
would seem fitting to use computers to deliver painless dental anaesthesia.
It has been our experience that patients are amazed to feel no
pain, even in those areas of the mouth which might have been expected
to be sensitive.

It has been remarkable in demonstrating that the injection is still what
causes most phobia and when this is painless, the rest of the treatment
proceeds in a very relaxed fashion. The wand is being constantly evaluated
and monitored in various clinical trials, one of which is at the "Q
Clinic" in London.
Method
Topical anaesthetic is first applied to freeze the gum and then a tiny
needle is gently introduced through the already-numb tissue to anaesthetize
the surrounding area. The controlled flow also eliminates the "bee
sting" effect, which is descriptive of the pain associated with a
surge of fluids into tissue
Technical Details
With the microprocessor-controlled CompuDent delivery system and
the revolutionary Wand® handpiece, giving local anesthetic injections
of all types has never been easier. Because less penetration force is
required, needle advancement is almost effortless. The flow rate of the
anesthetic is controlled by a microprocessor instead of the pressure of
the clinicians' thumb, making it more precise. The Wand can make giving
a painless injection one of the easiest tasks in the day.
Think of the palm-thumb grasp and pressing movement required to inject
with a traditional syringe. Then picture the precise movements you can
make when holding a pen - to write, to draw. No wonder the Wand enables
such accuracy. The pen-like grasp allows bi-directional rotation during
injection, which prevents needle deflection that can occur with a traditional
syringe. A straighter path results in a more accurate injection, meaning
fewer missed blocks, and a more rapid onset of anesthesia.
Injection dynamics
There are three basic stages of a dental injection and, therefore, three
opportunities for a patient to feel discomfort: the initial needle Puncture,
the Penetration of the needle to the injection site, and the Delivery
of the anesthetic solution. The CompuDent's controlled flow and
pressure technology and related techniques will allow you to give an easier,
consistently more comfortable injection, even in the dense tissue of the
palate. A Pre-Puncture technique has been developed for the initial tissue
Puncture; an Anesthetic Pathway is used to Penetrate the needle through
the tissue; and the Delivery of the anesthetic is below the patient's
Pain Threshold. The design of the Wand® handpiece also allows easy
rotation, reducing the force necessary to penetrate tissue and canceling
needle deflection.
Testimonial of a Clocktower Dental Clinic Patient
On the occasions we are obliged to visit our dentist the majority
arrive with at least circumspect trepidation. The ideas of the old tweezers
and pinchers pervade our subconscious, no matter our level of bravado.
However, no more!
Our dentist has discovered a "Magic wand" to remove the
pain. This is a device which delivers a slow injection to the gums without
the stab of the needle. There is no pain and the anaesthesia wears off
after anything between one and three hours. There is no swelling of
the face or bruised feeling commonly experienced after a normal injection.
Certainly there have been many advances in technology in recent
years and I ,for one, thoroughly recommend and welcome this one!
Signed,
A Grateful Patient
