Suffering From Yellow Smokers Teeth?

Suffering From Yellow Smokers Teeth?

Solutions in Epsom to restore stained teeth.

Tooth discolouration can be caused by a number of factors. Some, such as that caused by regular tea drinking, can accumulate over a long period of time.

One of the habits most likely to cause severe discolouration though, is smoking.

Perhaps through the combination of health advice and the availability of a smoking alternative in vaping, fewer and fewer people now smoke tobacco based products such as cigarettes or cigars. Whether you still smoke or have recently stopped though, several years of this  habit will almost certainly have resulted in badly stained teeth.

Yellow teeth

The tar and nicotine in cigarettes will gradually accumulate on the surface of your teeth, finding its way into the tiniest of cracks and crevices. Tar especially is very sticky and is therefore almost impossible to remove through brushing alone. Those who have smoked heavily for a very long time, may even find that their teeth are closer to brown in colour than yellow.

If you have recently stopped smoking and especially if you need an extra motivation not to start again, this is an excellent time to have your teeth whitened, reminding yourself how your teeth could look if you don’t start smoking again.

Teeth whitening

For most patients of The Clock Tower Dental Clinic in Epsom, our chairside teeth whitening procedure should produce excellent results. Providing that your teeth are not too heavily stained, this is a fast acting treatment that can produce a whiteness that you probably thought was no longer possible, and also in the space of just one hour. The treatment itself is entirely comfortable and non invasive. It involves putting a whitening gel on the teeth which is then activated with a special light. Typically within the space of just one hour, your teeth will be whitened by up to eight shades, leaving you with a great new smile!

Veneers

Where you have smoked quite heavily for a long time, there is a very good chance that your teeth will be heavily stained. Whilst you could still have a teeth whitening procedure, the severe staining may mean that there is not quite the improvement that you had hoped for. Many of our Epsom patients do still opt to try a whitening treatment first to see what the results bring, before deciding whether to accept the new colour, or to have more permanent treatment to restore the whiteness. This comes in the form of porcelain dental veneers.

Veneers essentially replace the heavily stained surface of the visible front teeth. This does involve removing a very fine layer of the enamel from the tooth which is then replaced using a porcelain veneer; produced to match your natural teeth but lighter in shade. This is attached using a dental adhesive and should last you for a least ten years, with good care.

Both options above are available to anyone wishing to have nicer looking teeth. We will be pleased to discuss your tooth discolouration issue and offer advice as to which treatment may offer the best solution. Even if we feel that veneers offer the best option, we are happy for you to try the whitening treatment first, should you wish.
