Porcelain Veneers For That ‘Perfect Smile’

Veneers are increasing in popularity and for good reason.
A few years ago, many people had barely even heard of dental veneers, however things have now changed considerably. Initially used as a temporary solution to the heavily tobacco stained teeth of Hollywood stars of the ‘40s and ‘50s, veneers had, for some time, been largely used to improve the smiles of the rich and famous.
Times change though, and the rise of the celebrity reality shows on TV has brought dental veneers to the attention of a wider audience who, wishing to have similarly attractive smiles to those on TV, have increasingly chosen them as their preferred option.
Of course, there are a wide range of other cosmetic treatments that we provide at the Clocktower Dental, Implant & Facial Centre which can help you create a more attractive smile, but veneers are very effective and can be used for patients for whom other smile improvement methods may not be so effective. Let’s take a closer look in this week’s blog.
A long-lasting alternative to teeth whitening
The first step that most people take when having a smile makeover is to have their teeth whitened. This is a very effective treatment and one that we provide at our popular dentist in Epsom. For most people, this is an excellent treatment as it is very affordable, non invasive and can give you a great looking white smile.
As this is the case, you might wonder why people would have porcelain veneers fitted instead as this can require dental work being done on your teeth. The answer is that, for some people, veneers will produce better results.
While teeth whitening is a great procedure, it works less well on those who have heavily stained teeth. For example, if you have smoked for a long time, a whitening procedure will improve the colour but probably not to the degree that you would really like. As veneers replace the affected enamel rather than change its colour, they are excellent for this purpose.
The same applies for those whose teeth have small flaws such as a chip or crack. These will still be visible following a teeth whitening procedure but not when we fit porcelain veneers. In effect then, you have total control over how your teeth look with veneers as opposed to improving your natural teeth with a whitening procedure.
Not just cosmetic
It is not only those looking to have a smile makeover who benefit from veneers though. They can also be used for people who have sensitive teeth. This is often caused by enamel erosion and veneers are a great way of replacing this damaged natural enamel with a porcelain version. This will prevent the often painful sensation that some people suffer when they eat or drink something very hot or very cold.
Beware of cheap options
We are aware that some people have been tempted to improve their smile by travelling abroad to have this particular treatment carried out. This has sometimes not worked out well at all, with some ending up with less than satisfactory results. The classic ‘Turkey teeth’ that some of you may have read about in the media is a good case in point. While you may save money by having this treatment carried out abroad, there are risks, some of them being very significant. Not only may you not be happy with the way that they look, there is a reasonable chance that permanent damage may be done to your teeth; something you may have to live with for the rest of your life.
In our view, it really isn’t worth the risk. The cosmetic dentists here at the Clocktower Dental, Implant & Facial Centre are all fully trained and experienced with this and other procedures. It is better to play safe when it comes to your teeth, even if the cost is a little more. Remember too, that our patients also have the option of payment plans that can help to spread the payment over a period of time.
